Should you buy ground coffee or whole beans and grind them yourself? Moka pot or filter machine, black or with milk: whatever your coffee preferences, you are sure to find a coffee to suit your taste among the varied selection offered by South Tyrolean roasters. There are 100% Arabica blends and premium blends, decaffeinated coffee and coffee pods, organic coffee and fair trade coffee. There is Italian espresso and filter coffee, with a delicate and fruity or intense and chocolatey flavour, and much more, available online and directly on site.

The three roasters focus on high-quality green coffee from selected producers in various countries around the equator and slow drum roasting. With this roasting method, the green coffee is roasted more gently and evenly than with industrial roasting, allowing the coffee to develop its full aroma.

The logo of the historic South Tyrolean company bridges the past and the present: the "ALPS COFFEE" brand, introduced in 2019, is complemented by the words "HIGHEST QUALITY.SCHREYÖGG 1890".

In 1890, Josef Schreyögg opened a shop selling spices and delicacies in Meran, and in 1905 he used an electric machine to roast coffee for the first time. Today, the company is based in Partschins | Rabland and is run by Stefan Schreyögg together with his father Peter Schreyögg.

However, the family-run company is not resting on its 135 years of experience in the coffee industry: coffee capsules, for example, are a completely new addition to the product range. And now there is not only a retail shop at the headquarters in Partschins | Rabland, but also one in Munich.

What's more, you can easily expand your coffee knowledge on the ALPS COFFEE website: take advantage of practical tips from coffee experts and enjoy coffee even more! To learn more about the subject, various seminars are available at the Training center of Alps Coffee roasting company in South Tyrol.

Valentin Hofer founded CAROMA 30 years ago. He runs the company together with his wife Irmi, and their eldest daughter has also joined the family business. At the company's headquarters in Völs am Schlern, visitors can immerse themselves in a world dedicated to coffee with a shop, Coffeeseum and demonstration roastery.

The gallery on the second floor of the coffee shop, with its wide selection, offers a good view of the roasting facility. To learn more about the world of coffee and Valentin's collection of over 2,000 coffee grinders, you can take a guided tour of the roasting facility with an introductory course.

CAROMA not only offers a wide range of coffees, but also various courses: for making the perfect coffee at home, but also for professional baristas who want to obtain an official SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) diploma.

Valentin Hofer is himself a coffee sommelier and SCA trainer. In addition to aroma, fairness and social responsibility are particularly important to him: since 2017, for example, CAROMA has been a partner in a sustainable coffee project with the Finca Rio Colorado and Finca el Mirador coffee plantations in Honduras.

KUNTRAWANT: coffee with a smuggler's moustache

The company name Kuntrawant is derived from the Vinschgau dialect word for smuggling.

KUNTRAWANT

The KUNTRAWANT logo depicts a moustache with a hat topped with a plume above it. What does this have to do with coffee? "Kuntrawant" is a dialect term from Vinschgau meaning smuggling, and for several decades in the last century, coffee was smuggled in the border region of Vinschgau.

Josef Gander, who launched his own roasted coffee brand "Kuntrawant" in 2013, is originally from Vinschgau: his family opened the Gander café and pastry shop in Prad am Stilfserjoch in 1968.

Since 2023, the Kaffeerösterei Kuntrawant Lana has been offering a café, a coffee shop and a show roastery.

Meanwhile, the café in Vinschgau has been renamed Caffeebar Kuntrawant Prad and has joined forces with the Kuntrawant Lana roasting company, with a café, coffee shop and open roasting facility. The latter was inaugurated in 2023 and is also featured in the book "Die schönsten Restaurants, Hotels & Bars" (The most beautiful restaurants, hotels and bars), published this year by Callwey.

But even more important than the design is the taste: the magazine crema dedicated to coffee named the Espresso sotto banco the winner of the 2025 test.

South Tyrolean coffee roasters with online shops

ALPS COFFEE, CAROMA and KUNTRAWANT have online shops that offer a wide selection of coffee specialities, as well as drinking chocolate from their respective brands, mugs with the company logo, coffee makers and other accessories for coffee lovers. Two other South Tyrolean coffee roasters with online shops are ELIGO Coffee in Branzoll and Mohlwerk in Tiers am Rosengarten

The Garaboni coffee roaster in St. Jakob | Leifers, with its brands "5.20 | Coffee from South Tyrol" and "garaboni ... il tuo caffè", does not have its own online shop.

Which South Tyrolean roastery produces the best coffee?

It's a matter of taste. We recommend trying all the different coffee specialities. Since coffee preparation plays an important role in its taste, you could also attend a basic barista course, a latte art seminar or another workshop.

How are things looking in terms of sustainability at South Tyrolean coffee roasters?

KUNTRAWANT, CAROMA and ALPS COFFEE also offer organic coffee, and part of the CAROMA and ALPS COFFEE range is Fairtrade certified. However, it is not only in coffee with the official Fairtrade label that importance is attached to fair trade relations and working conditions: CAROMA, for example, focuses primarily on direct trade with small farmers and cooperatives, and ELIGO Coffee is also synonymous with traceable and socially fair coffee.
