Historical restaurants & hotels

Every year, a jury of experts honours the most remarkable historic hotels and restaurants in South Tyrol. The reason is to advance authentic gastronomic structures and to put them in the spotlight.

2026

Gasthof zum Hirschen in Sarntal: For centuries, this establishment has been synonymous with warm hospitality in the heart of the village of Sarnthein. The wood-panelled dining room dating back to the 15th century, cosy rooms with individual charm and the idyllic garden with shady trees create a harmonious and unique atmosphere thanks to the balance between preserved tradition and careful development.

2025

Alte Post in Atzwang: The Kelder family has been running the inn at the foot of the Ritten for 7 generations, with its roots going back to 1186. Hospitality has been practised here for centuries, and even today guests can stay overnight in the historic ambience and enjoy South Tyrolean cuisine.

2024

Ansitz Pünthof in Algund: The history of the estate dates back to the 13th century. It has been owned by the Wolf family since 1633. It has been used for hospitality since 1957 and currently houses rooms and apartments. The manor house, which has been a listed building since 1979, has developed into a unique ensemble that fulfils the constantly changing tourist tasks and at the same time respects the historical structure.

The Hotel Villa Westend in Meran also received a special award.

2023

Franziskanerstuben & Goldenstern Townhouse in Bozen: The restaurant Franziskanerstuben includes 3 cosy parlours and a historic cellar. Just around the corner from this restaurant in the historic centre of Bozen, the Goldenstern Townhouse welcomes guests in a 13th century house: the two partner establishments create a harmonious combination of historic flair, tried and proven tradition and contemporary hospitality.

The restaurant Sichelburg in Pfalzen also received a special award.

2022

Hotel Palace Merano in Meran: The hotel has retained its luxurious charm for over 100 years and is Meran's only Grand Hotel. Whether it's the magnificent dining room or the dreamlike garden: the hotel, which opened in 1906, enchants with its generous elegance.

The Gasthof Dreikirchen near Barbian also received a special award.

2020

Hotel Schloss Englar in St. Michael/Eppan: The historical building in Überetsch is family-run and embedded in a dreamlike cultural and natural landscape. Guests are offered a historical as well as modern living ambiance with in-house winery.

The Berghotel Ladinia in Corvara also received a special award.

2019

Hotel Gasthof Zum Hirschen in Unsere Liebe Frau im Walde: A relaxing holiday retreat was realized only a few meters form the pilgrimage church, taking up the basic ideas of the former pilgrims’ refuge and combining it with modern comfort. The family-run hotel is a place of hospitality with a relaxed atmosphere inviting to reflect on the essential.

The Gasthof Zum Riesen in Tschars also received a special award. In fact, there are two worthy prize winners after a year’s break.

2017

Sonnenburg Castle in St. Lorenzen: Thanks to current investments, high sensitivity and sense of tradition, the dilapidated monastery above Sonnenburg turned into a very special four-star hotel.

The Gasthof Krone in the village centre of Aldein also received a special award.

2016

Ansitz zum Löwen in Burgeis: The building on the main square of Burgeis was abandoned for many years and was left to decay. In 2011, it was laboriously restored and since then, it characterises again the village-scape. 

The Hotel Monte Sella in St. Vigil also received a special award.

2015

Restaurant Sigmund in Meran: is in the heart of the old town and sustains the tradition of the historic inn next to the town gate. In addition, it has been redeveloped in a very careful and well-considerate way.

The Hotel Goldener Adler in Brixen also received a special award.

2014

Seehotel Ambach on Lake Kaltern: The historic hotel 2014 is only 40 years old and is one of the most important projects of the famous South Tyrolean architect Othmar Barth. Neither the exterior view nor the interior of the modern house have changed since the seventies. The Seehotel Ambach is a great example of the symbiosis between the interior and the surrounding landscape. 

The Suite & Breakfast Ottmanngut in Meran also received a special award.
