Around the Schlern, Langkofel, Plattkofel and Rosengarten mountains, vast alpine pastures blend with the striking rock formations of the Dolomites. The region includes the holiday resorts of Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern and Tiers am Rosengarten – offering opportunities for hiking and cycling in summer, as well as skiing, cross-country skiing and winter hiking during the colder months.

Kastelruth, Seis, Völs & Tiers

At the foot of the Seiser Alm and the Schlern massif lie Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern and Tiers am Rosengarten, along with other hamlets and villages.

Seis is the main departure point for the Seiser Alm cable car. As the largest town in the holiday region, Kastelruth combines a charming historic centre with stunning mountain scenery. Völs lies close to the striking Schlern and the popular bathing lake Völs am Schlern. The idyllic village of Tiers is more oriented towards the Rosengarten and the Tiers Valley in terms of its landscape.

The Seiser Alm between Schlern and Langkofel

Covering around 56 km², the Seiser Alm is the largest high-altitude alpine pasture in Europe. The high plateau lies in the South Tyrolean Dolomites and is framed by a distinctive mountain backdrop: to the west and south-west rises the Schlern with the Rosszähne, whilst to the south-east the Langkofel and the Plattkofel dominate the panorama. To the north of the Seiser Alm lies Gröden, another region of the Dolomites.

Part of the Seiser Alm forms part of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park. Alpine meadows, forests and Dolomite peaks combine here to form a diverse habitat for alpine flora and fauna. Compatsch is the central hub on the high alpine pasture and serves as a junction for mountain railways, hiking trails and other activities.

Summer on the Seiser Alm & in the Schlern region

In summer, the range of activities on offer extends from easy walking trails to hut-to-hut and mountain hikes, right through to fixed-rope routes and more challenging summit climbs. Hiking on the Seiser Alm and Schlern region is the best way to explore the Dolomite landscape.

Other sporting activities available around the high alpine pasture include mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, trail running and paragliding. The landscape offers great variety, with the open alpine pastureland of the Seiser Alm and imposing mountain peaks, as well as wooded slopes and picturesque villages. With the 18-hole golf course at GC St. Vigil Seis, the region is also ideal for a golfing holiday in South Tyrol.

Winter amongst ski slopes and cross-country trails

In winter, the Seiser Alm transforms into a vast winter sports area. The Seiser Alm ski area, which is linked to the Gröden ski area, offers wide slopes and a snow park against the backdrop of the Schlern, Langkofel and Plattkofel mountains.

Cross-country skiing plays a special role on the Seiser Alm: around 80 km of trails at altitudes of between approximately 1,800 and 2,200 metres are available for both classic and skating styles. Toboggan runs and winter and snowshoe hiking trails round off the range of activities – including in the quieter area around Tiers am Rosengarten.

Schlern Witches, Alpine Pastoral Life & Living Tradition

The Schlern is not only a scenic landmark but also the setting for numerous legends and myths. Particularly well-known are the stories of the Schlern witches, who, according to tradition, gathered on the mountain and sent thunderstorms across the land.

Alpine pasture farming has also shaped the Seiser Alm for a long time. Even today, cows, horses, sheep and goats spend the summer on the high pastures. In autumn, the animals return to the valley in all their finery. The transhumance from the Seiser Alm leads from Compatsch towards Kastelruth and is accompanied by music, a farmers’ market and traditional customs.

How to get to the Seiser Alm: Cable car, bus & restricted access

To limit traffic on the high alpine pasture, the road to Compatsch is closed to private vehicles at certain times during the day. The Seiser Alm cable car connects Seis directly with Compatsch; there are bus connections from Kastelruth, Völs and other locations. Rules, access times, parking possibilities and exceptions are summarised in detail under How to reach the Seiser Alm.
