Mt. Sass Rigais

Mount Sass Rigais is a famous peak in the Geisler massif. The Geisler massif is part of the Puez Geisler Nature Park and builds the spectacular northern border of the Villnösstal Valley.

The 3,025 m peak is reachable by a medium difficult fixed rope route coming from Gröden. The Geisler massif is a popular photo-motif. Like the Mt. Rosengarten the Geisler massif turns red in the sunset and watches majestically over the enchanted and beautiful valley Villnöss.

Mount Sass Rigais is the second highest mountain of the massif and absolutely recommendable for friends of fixed rope routes. The highest peak is by the way Mount Furchetta (3,030 m above sea level) and 1,000 m long north-face.

Tour description:

Your starting point is St. Christina in Gröden. Drive to the Col Raiser cable car and take it. Arrived at the summit station, take the path in Eastern direction and walk to Regensburgerhütte Refuge (20 min). There follow the path to Sass Rigais and path 13 to Plan Ciautuer. Leave the path and go to the next fork. There take the path to Sass Rigais and soon you will reach the access of the fixed rope route. The route isn’t difficult and good secured. After totally 3,5 hours you will reach the summit.

For the descent we recommend to take the more difficult East-route, which runs by small path and a fixed rope route. At the exit, at Salierscharte-embrasure, go in direction of Plan Ciautuer and from there back to Col Raiser summit station and down to St. Christina. If you want you can also take the East route for the ascent and the South route for descent.

Details of the tour:

  • Lenght: 6 hours
  • Difference of altitude: 490 m of ascent, 592 m of descent
  • Level of difficulty: moderate
