Short description

If you want to combine a visit to the famous Neustift monastery with a leisurely hike through the vineyards of the Eisack Valley and a stop at a rustic wine tavern, this leisurely hike to the Vahrner See lake is a great choice.

Starting point of the tour

Neustift monastery

Destination point of the tour

Lake Vahrn

Route description

Starting from the car park of the Neustift monastery, walk a short distance back towards the main road. After the bridge over the Eisack, turn right and stay on the tarmac road, which turns into a footpath after a while.

After about 10 minutes, a narrower path branches off to the left, leading slightly uphill through the vineyards. Then you first cross the main road and shortly afterwards you come to a subway under the Brenner motorway. After this subway, keep right to take in the loop around Lake Vahrn and the associated biotope.

The trail then continues along the edge of the forest to Vahrn. Once there, keep to the lower side of the village and pass another subway and the main road. Via the Griessweg (and after a refreshment stop at the Griesser Hof) you return to the Neustift monastery.

Tip by the author

Don't miss out on a stop at the listed Griesser Hof between Vahrn and Neustift. The menu includes homemade wine and many home-made delicacies from typical farmhouse cuisine, which taste particularly good in the rustic parlour.
