Provincial Mining Museum Location Schneeberg

At Mt. Schneeberg, ore was mined for many centuries. Today’s location of the Provincial Mining Museum with the mining village St. Martin is a rewarding destination for an adventure hike.

The location of Schneeberg is located at 2,355 m of altitude and can only be reached on foot: from Timmelsjoch road in Passeiertal in about 2 hours and from Ridnaun/Maiern in about 4 hours. In fact, you will enjoy great views and exciting insights into the history of mining in the region.

History

The earliest written notice about ore mining at Mt. Schneeberg dated back to the year 1237: A side note says that swords were paid with “Excellent silver from Schneeberg”. Around 1500, mining in Tyrol had reached its peak: 1,000 pitmen prospected for argentiferous galena in about 70 tunnels of Schneeberg at that time. Sphalerite, the actual main ore, was mined and used only from the 19th century.

Highest permanent settlement in Europe

From 1870, the mining village St. Martin had become a quite big settlement with inn, church, hospital and elementary school. In 1967, the pitmen were moved to Maiern in Ridnaun Valley. Until the definitive closing of the mine in 1985, the ore deposits were accessed only from Ridnaun via the Poschhaus tunnel. In Ridnaun, there is another location of the Provincial Mining Museum.

Mining in the mountains

Today, only a few houses and factory buildings are left of the mining village St. Martin. One of them offers a permanent exhibition about the history of mining in the region. Educational trails lead to buried tunnels and heavy machines that were left where they were after closure. Guided tours are offered in and around the mine, allowing you to learn more about mining at Mt. Schneeberg.
