Christmas markets in South Tyrol

Snow is falling, the air becomes colder and colder, and the most beautiful time of the year comes closer. It is Christmas time in South Tyrol, and with it also time for the magic atmosphere of the traditional Christmas markets.

Year after year, the Christmas markets are a key reason why so many visitors come to South Tyrol during Advent. Here, the scents, flavours and music take them back to days gone by, making them feel as though they have been transported back to their childhood.

However, visitors to the Christmas markets owe this wonderfully romantic atmosphere to more than just the delicious hot drinks such as mulled wine, punch and mulled apple juice.

The scent of cinnamon, pine branches and chestnuts, the jingle of Christmas decorations at the stalls and the Christmas carols playing softly in the background… All of this combines to create a wonderful atmosphere, heightening the anticipation of the festive season and of lovely moments with the family.

Advent, Advent...

Between late November and early January, Christmas markets take place in many towns across South Tyrol – the largest and best-known, of course, in Bozen and Meran. But Bruneck, Brixen, Sterzing and Glurns are also definitely worth a visit during the Advent season.

Those who prefer a quieter, more traditional atmosphere should visit the Christmas markets in South Tyrolean villages, such as the Alpine Advent in Sarntal. There is very little kitsch there, but plenty of authentic local specialities, produce and contemplative music.

Also highly recommended are the Mountain Christmas in Kastelruth and the Christmas village in Klausen.
