Cross-country skiing Ahrntal: The most beautiful trails in the Tauferer Ahrntal

Ahrntal is one of the most varied cross-country skiing regions in South Tyrol. Rather than a single large cross-country centre, winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to several trail areas, each with its own character – from the sunny trail in Kasern to the biathlon training centre in Rein in Taufers. In total, there are around 50 kilometres of trails available for classic cross-country skiing and skating. The routes lead through snow-covered sections of the valley, across open alpine pastures and along impressive mountain landscapes.

Cross-country skiing in Ahrntal: four trail areas, four distinct characters

Anyone wishing to go cross-country skiing in Ahrntal will find the right trail to suit almost any level of ability. Whilst Rein in Taufers, with its biathlon training centre, attracts both beginners and more competitive cross-country skiers, Kasern impresses with its sunny location. The high-altitude trail in Weißenbach is of medium to high difficulty, whilst the route between Mühlwald and Lappach appeals to athletic and nature-loving cross-country skiers with its length and route. It is precisely this variety that makes the Ahrntal an interesting alternative to the major cross-country skiing centres in the Dolomites.

Rein in Taufers: Cross-country skiing at the Biathlon Centre

Rein in Taufers is regarded as the Nordic centre of the Ahrntal valley. The cross-country skiing and biathlon centre, situated at an altitude of around 1,600 metres, offers several interconnected circular trails of varying difficulty. The routes range from short training loops to longer tours of up to 16 kilometres in length.

The trails run through the Rein valley and offer repeated impressive views of the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park. Thanks to the high altitude and modern infrastructure, training camps and competitions are held here regularly. At the same time, the wide trails and clear route layout ensure that beginners feel at home too.

Kasern: Cross-country skiing at the head of the valley

Kasern, one of South Tyrol’s most snow-sure locations, lies at the very northern end of the Ahrntal valley. The sunny trail starts right at the head of the valley and winds its way through the winter landscape, passing the famous Church of the Holy Spirit.

Depending on the route chosen, the trail can be between three and ten kilometres long and is particularly suitable for leisurely cross-country skiers. The mostly gentle gradients and sunny location make the trail a popular choice for relaxing days of cross-country skiing. At the same time, the route offers impressive views of the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks of the Zillertal Alps.
