Chestnuts from South Tyrol
Chestnuts are a must in the autumn in South Tyrol and they are the main component of the harvest tradition Törggelen.
We walk on the streets of the city, with chestnuts in hand in paper bags, and they keep warm ours hands in the cold autumn afternoons. The best are undoubtedly roasted chestnuts!
Children go in the woods with their parents or friends, to collect chestnuts, playing among the cows, sheep and animals in farms. Since the month of September, everyone in South Tyrol go to cellars and restaurants to experience the most important tradition of the period: Törggelen with family and friends.
The harvest tradition "Törggelen" includes not only roasted chestnuts, but you can taste dishes with chestnut like creams, soups and desserts. Enjoy pleasant moments in autumn in South Tyrol in Meran, Eisacktal and Bozen and environs.

SBB/Roter Hahn - Frieder BlickleRoter Hahn: Tips for roasting chestnuts
Did you find the roasted chestnuts at the end of the Törggelen menu at the farm taverns delicious? On the farms in South Tyrol, the chestnuts are usually roasted over an open fire, giving them an unmistakable flavour. But chestnuts roasted on the cooker at home also taste delicious if you follow the following tips from the experts at the Roter Hahn wine taverns and farmhouse inns.
- Place the chestnuts in a bowl of water and sort out the ones floating on top.
- Score the remaining chestnuts on the bulbous side with a box cutter or other sharp knife.
- Place a pan on the hob and allow it to get really hot. Then place the chestnuts in the pan, cover the pan with a lid and turn the heat down to medium.
- Roast the chestnuts for around 20 minutes, swirling the pan from time to time to prevent the chestnuts from burning.
- Spread out a slightly damp tea towel in a bowl, place the roasted chestnuts in it, cover with the towel and serve hot after 3-5 minutes.
