Mt. Weißkugel

The ascent to Mount Weißkugel is one of the greatest high alpine mountain tours in the Eastern Alps.

In the year 1846 the 3,739 m high mountain was climbed for the first time by Johann Gurschler and Josef Weittheim from Schnals Valley in South Tyrol.

Between the first ascent and today lie more 150 years, but Mt. Weißkugel hasn’t lost anything of his fascination. The glacier became smaller, yes, but seen from the South Tyrolean side, Mt. Weißkugel is the highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps. To do this glacier tour we recommend taking a rope, pickax, climbing irons and ice-screws with you.

Tour description:

Starting point is the Innere Glieshof farm in Matschertal Valley in Vinschgau Valley. Here you can park your car. Take path 1 and follow it until you reach the majestic Oberetteshütte Refuge at 2,677 m above sea level (2,5 hours from starting point). Now you have to follow the good signposts in direction of Mt. Weißkugel to Matscher glacier.

Pay attention at crevasses and hike on the right side with a left-curve to the Hintereisjoch Pass. Arrived there take the corn snow ridge and then the last rocky ridge to the peak (4 hours from refuge).

Take the same paths back as to get on the peak.

Details of the tour:

  • Length: 11 hours
  • Altimeters: 1,932 m
  • Level of difficulty: medium difficult
