Trostburg Castle near Waidbruck

The history of the castle near Waidbruck dates back to the 12th century. In the following century, the castle became the property of the Counts of Wolkenstein-Trostburg for almost 600 years. Oswald von Wolkenstein, late medieval singer, poet and composer, probably spent most of his childhood here. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, the castle complex was generously extended and rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 17th century under Count Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg.

South Tyrol Castles Museum

Today, Trostburg Castle is the domicile of the South Tyrolean Castles Institute and the South Tyrolean Castle Museum and houses the permanent exhibition Castles - Constructions by History. Visitors can admire, among other things, Romanesque door and window arches, Gothic fortifications, magnificent halls and panelling from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as furnishings from the Renaissance in the very well-preserved castle complex in Eisacktal.
