Lake Durnholz

Visitors can reach Lake Durnholz from Bozen or in summer from Penser Joch pass. Just as the Sarntal Valley itself, it offers a particular integrity and tranquillity. The direct access to the lake and to Durnholz village, which is part of the municipality of Sarntal, is only possible for residents. About 300 m from the lake, there is a chargeable parking lot.

Mountain sports paradise

Easy hike around the lake via the family-friendly path to Seeb hut or challenging mountain tour to the 2741 m high Mt. Jakobsspitze – there are many wonderful hikes starting at Lake Durnholz for all tastes. Also, mountain bikers are spoilt for choice. They can for instance choose a circular tour from Sarnthein to the lake and back or a challenging day tour that begins and ends in Feldthurns in Eisacktal Valley.

In winter, the surroundings of the lake offer wonderful ski tours and snowshoe hikes in varied routes, leading to panoramic summits and saddles in lofty heights. As soon as the ice gets thicker in winter, Lake Durnholz becomes a wonderful ice-skating rink.

Fishing fun & cultural gem

Lake Durnholz has an almost triangular shape, is about 900 m long and 300 m wide. The most important rivers are Großalmbach river and Seebach river, the outflow is Durnholz river. If you have a fishing licence and if you buy a day ticket at Hotel Fischerwirt, you may be lucky to fish a wonderful trout in summer.

Not only nature and sports lovers will like Durnholz. Also, St. Nicholas church offers worth-seeing Gothic frescoes dating back to the 15th century. They were uncovered only in 1986.
