From glacial lake to biathlon mecca
Lake Antholz was probably created by a landslide that closed the valley and blocked the outflow. A well-known legend, however, tells of three wealthy farmers whose farms were flooded by a sudden spring after they rejected a beggar – a story that gives the lake its mystical character.
Today, the lake is not only a place of tranquillity, but also a venue for international sporting events: Right next to it is the Südtirol Arena, the famous biathlon centre of Antholz. Every year in January, the world's best biathletes gather here – an exciting contrast to the otherwise tranquil lake.
Close to the border & Staller Sattel Pass
Lake Antholz is located just a few kilometres from the Austrian border. The nearby Staller Sattel Pass connects South Tyrol with the Defereggen Valley in East Tyrol. Already the winding ascent through dense forest and flowering alpine meadows is an experience.
Once at the top, visitors are treated to a breathtaking view over two regions characterized by shared natural treasures, but each with its own culture and cuisine. Lake Obersee, just over the border, is another worthwhile destination for a short detour – especially for hikers and motorcyclists.
