Moreover, the Empress Sissi will participate at the Grape Festival in Meran on October 21st, decorating one of the three Trauttmansdorff floats. The event, in honour of Empress Sissi, is realised in collaboration with the cultural route “Sissi’s path”, having taken part of the Gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff since many years.
Sissi’s life illustrated at Trauttmansdorff
Sissi travelled to Meran for the first time on October 16th 1870 with the new Brenner Railway, accompanied by a retinue of 102 persons. With her was also her ailing two-year-old daughter Marie Valerie, who recovered from her illness already after eight months in Meran. It was her helping Meran to its international reputation of health resort, which persists until today. As well, Castle Trauttmansdorff has become a very popular and demanded residence among aristocrats and the wealthy.
For the arrival of the Empress, the castle’s rooms had been entirely renovated and magnificently furnished. Even a new court telegraph office with direct connection to Vienna was realised.
Wandering through the botanic gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff, you can visit the terrace and the Sissi throne. These were erected on behalf of Baron von Deuster on the occasion of a feast in 1908, recalling the visit of the imperial couple at Castle Trauttmansdorff. Furthermore, you will love it to walk along Sissi’s path.
In remembrance of the famous guests, the castle houses a permanent exhibition with personal exhibit by the empress since 2008.
