Messner Mountain Museum Corones

The sixth and final museum by the famous extreme alpinist Reinhold Messner is the conclusion of his museum project and the crowning of the Messner Mountain Museums.

The world-famous architect Zaha Hadid planned the unique and modern building on top of the hiking and skiing area Mt. Kronplatz (2,275 m). The project was realized in collaboration with the Skirama Kronplatz and Reinhold Messner. The realization was an enormous challenge for all parties. Finally, the grand opening took place in July 2015.

The Messner Mountain Museum Corones mainly picks out as a central theme the traditional alpinism and the alpine history, with important characters, as well as the triumphs and tragedies around the most known mountains in the world. The in large part subterranean construction seems to float deeply into the mountain. Besides artworks, equipment and movies, the exhibition space also displays thought-provoking quotes.

Furthermore, the magnificent environs were included into the concept of the highest museum in South Tyrol. From three viewing platforms, the visitors enjoy a wonderful view over the Southtyrolean mountains and especially on those peaks playing a significant role in the life of Reinhold Messner.

The museum’s name derives from Plan de Corones – the Ladin denomination of Mt. Kronplatz. Corones means “the crown”, translated into English.
