Easter eggs in 3 variations

Spring is just around the corner and in three weeks time it will be Maundy Thursday. You have probably already started decorating your home for Easter and thinking about what to put on the table that day. One thing is for sure: Easter without eggs is unthinkable. For Christians, the egg is a symbol of resurrection, but even before Easter and Christianity, the egg was a symbol of fertility and new life.

For many, the classic Easter egg, the hard-boiled and coloured egg, is a must. In South Tyrol, as in other areas, they are blessed with ham and Easter bread before being used in the custom of Easter pecking and then eaten with gusto. The chocolate eggs that the Easter Bunny hides in the Easter basket play an important role for children. White poplar branches with their 'hairy' buds are decorated with eggs and coloured ribbons and tied together with olive trees to decorate houses.

We have a recommendation from South Tyrol for all 3 types of eggs:

Eggs from happy hens

There are two farms in Gseis Valley that offer their hens a special service: the Hintnerhof of the Marchesini family in Pichl and the Lonzahof of the Kargruber family in St. Martin in Gsies. Both farms use mobile henhouses. Every two weeks or so, the hens are moved from one pasture to another, where they can roam freely and happily. This is good for the animals and the meadows. The Goggilan ('Goggilan' means 'eggs' in Pustertal dialect) from the Hintnerhof are organic eggs, while the Premium Goggilan from the LONZAhof are eggs from free-range hens. The eggs are available all year round in selected shops and bakeries in the Pustertal Valley and on the farm.

Chocolate delicacies

If you are among those who only like chocolate eggs, we recommend the gianduia eggs of Acherer Patisserie.Blumen, an excellent pastry shop in Brunico, which for Easter offers delicious chocolate eggs made by Master Pastry Chef Andreas Acherer, available in three sizes of 9, 12 or for the sweet tooth 20 eggs! If you are not in the area, you can easily buy them online and have them conveniently shipped to your home. In addition to the eggs that you can buy online, you can also buy small, medium or giant (approx. 2 kg) eggs in the shop, which are 100% customisable and in which you can also insert a small gift on request. The eggs are made of both 70% cocoa dark chocolate and 36% cocoa milk chocolate. In addition to the eggs, you will also find really cute chocolate sheep and bunnies in the shop.

Decorated goose eggs from the farm shop

The Gamsegghof has been in existence for over 300 years and is located in the idyllic Langtaufer valley near Graun in the Vinschgau region. The farm animals include geese, and the farmer's wife, Beatrix Hohenegger, creates colourful works of art from their eggs. Goose eggs are bigger and stronger than chicken eggs, making them perfect for Easter decorations. Beatrix needs a lot of care and patience: the raw, blown eggs are dipped in paint and dried. The farmer's wife then etches various designs or sayings into the coloured shell with a small tool similar to the one used to etch glass. Finally, the milk fat gives the egg a beautiful shine. The unique decorations are only available in the farm shop.
