Corn snow tours in Tauferer Ahrntal
The ideal season for ski touring isn’t winter, but spring. Now the really fit and sporty alpine ski mountaineers are in demand, because instead of short ski tours from hut to hut, now the peaks of 3,000 m high mountains await the alpine skiers.
While down in valley crocus and Co. are already in flower, above the tree limit rule perfect alpine touring conditions: overnight the snow cover is freezing but with the first rays of sun comes out the finest corn snow: perfect for free riding, also for beginners.
The best area to do corn snow tours in South Tyrol is the Tauferer Ahrntal. There are countless possibilities for alpine skiers on more than 80 glaciers, which are surrounding the valley. But every alpine skier has to consider the 5-6 hours of walk to the peak of the mountains and that avalanche risk increases during the day. Because of that corn snow tours have to begin early in the morning, the descent not later than about 11 a.m. Don't forget enough to drink and to eat and – of course – the avalanche rescue equipment!
The most popular corn snow tours are the ones to Magerstein, Schneebiger Nock and Großer Möseler. You have to be experienced with alpine tours and avalanche risks when you want to undertake a tour to one of these peaks.
