The mine of Prettau
Entering the mountain by the mine train. A visit of the show mine in Prettau is an absolute must, if you choose spending your holidays in Tauferer Ahrntal.Localities in the region
Why? The answer is simple. It is seldom to have the possibility of visiting the ancient tunnels, discovering the traces of miners and cupper. The mine at Rettenbach river in Prettau has been existing since 1400. Operations have stopped in 1893 and, after a short reopening period from 1957 to 1971, it is now definitely closed. However, this is valuable for the miners but not for visitors. More than 20 years ago, the Ignatius drainage adit was converted to a show mine, which is part of an enormous educational trail.
In order to facilitate the access for interested visitors, the mine train was renewed, making it now possible to enter the mine on wagons, equipped with a helmet, light and a raincoat. From the train station in the tunnel, you are then offered to guided tours through a 250 m and through a 90 m long tunnel, where professional guides inform you about the hard work in a mine and about the frequent techniques in a copper mine.
Above all, an excursion to the mine of Prettau is a special experience for families with children. Another disused tunnel hosts the so-called climatic gallery, where persons with respirational diseases inhale clean and allergen-free air.
The mine is open from April until the beginning of November, from Tuesday until Sunday, 09.30 am to 4.30 pm. Monday day of rest, except in August. Registration is necessary.
