Hiking in Vinschgau Valley

From Sulden to Tabaretta Refuge

Hiking in Sulden and in the surroundings of Mt. Ortler is a unforgettable experience. Maybe because of that Reinhold Messner – a famous alpinist – has opened there a museum called “Alpine Curiosa” where he shows everything about alpinism in the Ortler-area.

A special excursion is the one from Sulden to Hintergrat Refuge, K2 Refuge and finally to Tabaretta Refuge. Enjoy it!

The excursion

Start your excursion on the upper parking space near the valley station of the Sulden cable car. Take path 1 and follow him until you arrive at Saubach Refuge and the middle station of the cable car at 2172 m above sea level. Here starts path 2. Take it and hike towards Hintergrat Refuge, passing idyllic mountain lakes.

After a short break you continue your excursion on path 3 until you reach Mt. Langenstein and the Refuge K2. From here you have an amazing view over the Vinschgau Valley. Take now path 10-4a and hike through a very various landscape until you get to the Tabaetta Refuge, the destination of this excursion on 2556 m above sea level. Here you can admire the great northern slope of Mt. Ortler. Breathtaking!

To turn back to Sulden, take path 4 to St. Gertrud and from there on path 7 to Sulden.
The entire excursion lasts 6 hours.
