Hiking in Vinschgau Valley

Excursion at the feed of King Mount Ortler

The Mount Ortler area is a hiking-region with mostly demanding and long itineraries.

You have to have good physical conditions if you want to make your next excursion there: steep paths, exposed trails and many twists and turns bring you close to Mount Ortler. Hiking here is an adventure.

The excursion

Your starting point is near the church of St. Gertrud. Take path 4 in direction of Tabaretta Refuge. You will pass at the "Wiege" the "Kössler Wasser" and the outlook point "Schöpfgraben". After some hundred meters you have to take the alpine trail 4a in direction of Mt. Langenstein. After the crossing of the Marlt glacier moraine and many twists and turns you get finally to the Tabaratte Refuge (2556 m).

Now you follow the path to "Bärenkopfscharte"-notch (2871 m) and go along a few twists and turns to Paxer Refuge, where the normal ascent of the Ortler begins. To climb down go to the notch and take then path 185 to the Bergl Refuge. Complete your way down on path 186 passing the "Heilige Drei Brunnen"-sanctuary and getting to Trafoi. To come back to St.
Gertrud take your own car or public transport.

For the entire tour you need 6 hours. The difference in elevation imports 1180 in ascent and 1500 in descent.
