Walking on historic paths in Prettau

The “Krimmler Tauern” gap was once a famous passage for farmers, rangers, pastors, travelers and smugglers, who made deals in Austria and in Italy. Nowadays the ancient paths are perfect for doing historic excursions.

The excursion

The excursion begins in Kasern (situated near Prettau) at the car park. Along the via crucis you will reach the Heilig Geist Chapel. Passing by a closed custom office you have to take path 14. Walk along the path until you get to Obere Tauernalm alpine pasture (1018 m above sea level). There you have to take the long-distance-trail to reach the Hochwieser alpine pasture, the destination of this excursion in Tauferer Ahrntal Valley.

To turn back to Kasern take path 15. For the entire hiking-tour you will need about 5 hours.

Tip: well-trained hikers can extend the excursion and hike to “Krimmler Tauern” peak at 2633 m above sea level taking the Lausitz-long-distance-trail.
