Hiking in Eisacktal Valley

From Mühlbach to Meransen on the historic Lindenweg path

The path which connects Mühlbach and Meransen was first mentioned in 1174 and it is one of the most exciting and ancient paved paths in South Tyrol and one of the few some – how a legend says - on which even Attila walked.

The legend tells that 3 burgundy princesses Aubet, Cubet and Querre were on the run from the Huns. On their escape they came to the Säben monastery in Klausen and then over Mühlbach to Meransen, where they wanted to hide themselves. But on their way they collapse. Suddenly a source opened and the 3 princesses get strong and walked on. The source is there even today, a small chapel remembers the legend.

The excursion

The historic Lindenweg path is very steep and it is marked with number 12. The excursion begins in the center of Mühlbach, leads you northward and brings you on a small street to the last farm of Mühlbach. Here finally begins the Lindenweg path. Taking some wooden stairs you get into a lovely forest and after you have crossed the provincial road you come to a more steeply part of the path, which is paved from now on.

After 2 hours of walk you reach a meadow and after some minutes the mountain village Meransen. Return to Mühlbach by taking the cable car.
The path is very sunny and we recommend undertaking the excursion in spring or fall.

The excursion in Mühlbach is very demanding.
