Across the Alps: GORE-TEX Transalpine-Run 2010

Alps crossing on new route: from Ruhpolding (D) to Sexten (I)

As a "normal" mountaineer and hiker you will stuck up your nose hearing about people who are running more than 290 km in 8 days to cross the Alps from the North to the South, managing mountains, passes and valleys.

Mountain runs like like the GORE-TEX Transalpine-Run are surely extreme and ask for long preparations. Only the fitness decides if a sportsman can make it or not - this year between 4th and 11th September 2010.

This year, the run has a new route, which is even more challenging, leading in 8 days through 3 alpine countries: Starting point is Ruhpolding in Germany. Than the athletes (running in teams of 2) have to manage about 296 km and more than 17.700 m of difference in altitude, bevore they reach the finish line in Sexten in South Tyrol, Germany.

If you look at the distance profile, you will be happy like me, to not have to make this race. But the distance fascinate although. Maybe because record-breaking distances or maybe because of the great mountains the runners have to going through.

The stages of the GORE-TEX Transalpine-Run 2010:

  • Ruhpolding (GER) - St. Ulrich im Pillerseetal (AUT)
  • St. Ulrich im Pillerseetal (AUT) - Kitzbühel (AUT)
