Easter...culture, tradition and fun in South Tyrol!

South Tyrol is very close to its traditions that are still carried on in the whole region.

  • To the christian traditions belongs the cooking of the lamb, since the old jewish tradition was to celebrate Easter by sacrificing a little lamb.
  • A tipical Easter tradition is the „Osterpecken“ or „Preisguffen”, competition in which the weapons are the hard-boiled eggs. First people have to hit the two eggs against each other´s sting and than with the bottoms. The Winner? The owner of the hardest eggshell. The tradition wants everyone to meet in the church yard, after the Easter Sunday´s Mass, and play this funny game.
  • For the youngest ones, Easter Sunday is a great day. Infact, after havinf decorated the eggs, children may go out in the yard and look for presents and sweets brought by the “Easter Bunny”!
  • Like for Christmas cookies, at Easter the tradition wants everyone to decorate hard boiler eggs. Sometimes the eggs are emptied, decorated and than hung on a branch in order to bring some good luck.
  • On Easter Sunday, moreover, in every family the “Easter donkey” is elected. This will be the last one getting up in the morning and getting to the breakfast table.
  • At Easter young ladies use to bring an easter egg to the man they would like ot marry durino that year.
