Carnival customs in South Tyrol
They are stamping, screaming, laughing and startling: the "Zussl" and the "Egetmänner", who chase away the cold winter and wicked ghosts and welcome the spring. Both of them are traditional carnival characters and today the old costumes in South Tyrol are still alive.
Many years ago the winter was much harder than today: it was very cold, sometimes there was no food and in the darkness of the night the people suppose ghosts and demons. To chase away the winter, the hunger and the darkness, people have organized processions and they disguise themselves with fantastic masks.
Even today some of the old South Tyrolean carnival customs are alive. For example the procession of the "Zussl" in Prad am Stilfserjoch in Vinschgau or the "Egetmann parade" in Tramin.
